Guys! I godda say that Robert Crais is the best author to date whose books I have read. His detective novels --especially the Elvis Cole novels-- are riveting and are a thrill to read. I have heard folk say that detective novels are boaring simply because of the fact that they are predictable, but if you have not read Crais novels, you have read nothing yet. From The Monkey's Raincoat, Lullaby Town, Freefall to the Last Detective his books have you in a state of thorough enjoyment. I should add that I cannot wait for the Joe Pike novel The First Rule to come. Keep it up RC!!!

I've recently started reading his books. So far I've read the first two in the Elvis Cole series. I wouldn't call them the best I've ever read, but they are interesting. However, if you don't like a lot of dead bodies by the end of a book, don't read his books.

Who else within the same category is equal or then even better?

Well, that would be hard to pinpoint. There are probably thousands of mystery authors, but there are several categories of mysteries. I'm not big on categorizing things, so I'm not sure what category Robert Crais falls into. I mostly read what are called cozies which means they are mysteries without being violent. But, putting categories aside, some of the mystery/detective authors I like better are Greg Iles, Nelson DeMille, Carole Nelson Douglas, Janet Evanovich, and Mary Higgins Clark. Of those five, Greg Iles and Nelson DeMille do not write cozies.
